Description
SEIKO PROSPEX 1970 Diver's Modern Re-interpretation Save the Ocean SBDC169
The SEIKO PROSPEX SBDC169 is a Japanese Domestic Market mechanical diver’s watch based on the distinctive design of SEIKO’s 1970 diver. Created as a Save the Ocean Special Edition, it combines an Arctic-inspired white glacier dial with the asymmetrical case shape and protected four-o’clock crown associated with the historic model.
White Glacier-Inspired Dial
The white dial represents glaciers floating across the Arctic Ocean and the extreme cold of the surrounding landscape. Its three-dimensional pressed pattern evokes the layered texture of glacial ice, giving the dial visual depth while preserving the strong legibility expected from a PROSPEX diver’s watch.
LumiBrite is applied to the hands, indexes and bezel. A unidirectional rotating bezel provides an elapsed-time scale, while the date display adds practical everyday functionality.
1970 Diver’s Heritage
The case design is a modern reinterpretation of the asymmetrical SEIKO diver introduced in 1970. Its flowing case profile incorporates protection around the crown at four o’clock. The original model became known for its use by Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura during his 12,000-kilometer solo dog-sled journey from Greenland to Alaska between 1974 and 1976.
Automatic Caliber 6R35
The SBDC169 is powered by SEIKO’s Caliber 6R35, a mechanical automatic movement that can also be wound manually. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, uses 24 jewels and provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
SEIKO specifies an accuracy range of +25 to -15 seconds per day when worn on the wrist at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C. The movement also includes a stop-seconds mechanism and date display.
DiaShield and Sapphire Construction
The stainless steel case and bracelet are treated with SEIKO’s DiaShield surface coating to provide greater resistance to everyday scratches. A curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface supports clarity and durability.
The case measures 42.7 mm across, 46.6 mm from top to bottom and 13.2 mm thick. The stainless steel bracelet is fitted with a secure three-fold clasp, push-button release and diver’s extension.
200 m Air-Diving Water Resistance
The SBDC169 provides 200 m air-diving water resistance. Its diving-oriented construction includes a screw-down crown, screw case back, unidirectional rotating bezel and luminous display. The case back carries a “SPECIAL EDITION” inscription.
Save the Ocean Special Edition
Save the Ocean represents SEIKO PROSPEX’s support for marine conservation activities. The SBDC169 expresses this theme through a white glacier-inspired dial connected to the Arctic environment in which the original 1970 diver’s design demonstrated its reliability.
This model is officially designated a Save the Ocean Special Edition and was distributed in Japan through the SEIKO Global Brand Core Shop network. No numbered production quantity has been confirmed, so it should not be described as a quantity-limited edition.
Japanese Domestic Market Model
SBDC169 is the Japanese domestic reference for this model, while SPB301J1 is its corresponding international reference. Japanese Domestic Market designation identifies the market and reference system and is separate from the watch’s confirmed manufacture in Japan.
