The SEIKO Selection SBTR055 brings vintage-inspired chronograph styling into a compact, practical format designed for everyday wear. Part of the S Series International Line, this Japanese-market model combines a black dial with contrasting silver-tone subdials, a stainless steel case and bracelet, and the dependable accuracy of SEIKO’s battery-powered Caliber 8T63.
With a case diameter of 38.7 mm, the SBTR055 has more restrained proportions than many contemporary sports chronographs. Its box-shaped Hardlex crystal, slim tachymeter bezel and gently curved lugs reinforce its classical character while preserving the functionality expected from a modern quartz chronograph.
Black Dial with a Classic Chronograph Layout
The black dial uses three horizontally arranged subdials to create a balanced motorsport-inspired appearance. Contrasting silver-tone subdials improve visual separation while giving the watch the popular high-contrast appearance sometimes informally described by collectors as a reverse-panda layout.
The chronograph measures elapsed time in 1/5-second increments for up to 60 minutes. A dedicated small-seconds display allows the central hand to remain available for chronograph timing, while the additional 24-hour indication provides a clear distinction between morning and evening hours. A date window adds everyday practicality without significantly disrupting the dial’s symmetrical layout.
Compact Vintage-Inspired Case
The stainless steel case measures 38.7 mm across, 45.2 mm from lug to lug and 12.6 mm thick. These compact dimensions allow the watch to sit comfortably on a wide range of wrists and make it easier to wear beneath a shirt cuff than many oversized chronographs.
A box-shaped Hardlex crystal adds visual depth and contributes to the watch’s vintage character. LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes for improved visibility in darker conditions. The fixed tachymeter scale can be used together with the chronograph to calculate average speed over a known distance.
SEIKO Caliber 8T63 Quartz Chronograph
Inside the SBTR055 is SEIKO’s Caliber 8T63 battery-powered quartz movement. It delivers an official accuracy rating of approximately ±15 seconds per month and has an estimated battery life of about three years under normal operating conditions.
The movement supports a 60-minute chronograph with 1/5-second measurement, a small-seconds display, a 24-hour hand and a date display. Quartz operation makes the watch convenient for regular use because it does not require daily winding or the periodic charging associated with solar-powered models.
Stainless Steel Bracelet and Everyday Construction
The SBTR055 is fitted with a stainless steel bracelet secured by a three-fold clasp with push-button release. Its 20 mm lug width also provides a broad selection of compatible aftermarket straps for owners who want to change the character of the watch.
The screw case back and 5-bar water resistance provide protection for routine daily wear. The watch is also rated for magnetic resistance, but its 5-bar rating does not make it a diving watch and it should not be described as suitable for scuba diving.
International Line with a Japanese Reference
SBTR055 is the reference used for the Japanese market. The corresponding international version is sold as SSB479 or SSB479P1. Because the same design is officially distributed outside Japan, the SBTR055 is best described as a Japanese-market reference rather than a Japan-exclusive model.
This is a regular-production S Series model and is not identified by SEIKO as a numbered or limited edition.
