SEIKO ASTRON NEXTER 2nd Collection NOVA SBXY053

The SEIKO ASTRON NEXTER SBXY053 is a Japanese Domestic Market solar radio-controlled world-time watch inspired by the brilliance of a nova. Its dark navy prism-pattern dial, pink-gold-tone accents and integrated titanium construction give the watch a distinctive combination of modern technology and refined sports styling.

Powered by SEIKO's Caliber 8B63, the SBXY053 offers world time across 25 time zones, dual-time display and radio-controlled time correction using standard signals transmitted in Japan, China, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

NOVA-Inspired Dial Design

The design theme is NOVA, referring to the astronomical phenomenon in which a star rapidly increases in brightness and appears as if a new star has emerged. SEIKO expresses this concept through the precise prism pattern applied to the dial of its solar radio-controlled NEXTER models.

The SBXY053 combines a dark navy dial with pink-gold-tone accents. The geometric dial pattern reflects light from different angles, producing a changing appearance while preserving the structured, technological character of the ASTRON collection.

NEXTER Solidity & Harmonic Concept

The NEXTER series follows SEIKO's “Solidity & Harmonic” design concept. Its solid case construction and integrated case-and-bracelet form represent strength and modernity while maintaining a balanced fit on the wrist.

The case measures 48.5 mm in length, 42.7 mm in width and 11.4 mm in thickness. The lug sections are reduced to create a streamlined profile and allow the bracelet to flow directly from the case.

Solar Radio-Controlled Caliber 8B63

The SBXY053 is powered by SEIKO Caliber 8B63, a solar quartz movement that converts light into electrical energy. When fully charged, the watch operates for approximately nine months under normal conditions or approximately two years when the power-save function is activated.

The movement automatically or manually receives compatible terrestrial standard time signals. Radio reception is supported in Japan, China, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. Reception availability depends on the selected time zone, geographic location, buildings, weather and other reception conditions.

When a standard time signal cannot be received, the movement continues to operate with an average monthly accuracy of ±15 seconds.

World Time and Dual-Time Display

The world-time function allows the main display to show the local time in one of 25 time zones. The selected time zone is set manually, after which the hands, date and day are adjusted to the corresponding local time.

A subdial at 6 o'clock provides a second time display in a 24-hour format. This allows the watch to show the local time and the time in another selected region simultaneously. The watch also features a retrograde day-of-the-week display and a date calendar.

Automatic Timekeeping Functions

Caliber 8B63 includes automatic and manual radio reception, reception-result display, reception-level display and automatic hand-position correction. Its full-auto calendar is programmed through December 31, 2099.

Additional functions include quick start, overcharge prevention and power save. The watch does not automatically detect its location; the appropriate time zone must be selected when traveling.

Titanium and Ceramic Construction

The case and bracelet are made from lightweight, corrosion-resistant pure titanium. SEIKO's DiaShield surface treatment is applied to help protect the exterior from everyday scratches.

The bezel combines a titanium structure with a ceramic display plate. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, while SEIKO's Super Clear Coating suppresses reflections to improve visibility in bright conditions.

The complete watch weighs approximately 105 g. The titanium bracelet uses a push-button three-fold clasp with a smart-adjuster mechanism, allowing fine adjustment of the bracelet fit. The maximum compatible wrist circumference is approximately 195 mm.

Practical Everyday Performance

The SBXY053 has enhanced water resistance for daily use at 10 bar, magnetic resistance and a screw-down crown. LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes for improved visibility in low-light conditions.

The titanium construction is identified by SEIKO as resistant to metal allergies. Individual sensitivity can vary depending on the wearer and conditions of use.

Japanese Domestic Market Model

SBXY053 is a model number released for the Japanese domestic market. Its JDM designation describes the intended sales market and is separate from its confirmed country of manufacture. This model is manufactured in Japan.

The SBXY053 uses terrestrial standard radio signals rather than GPS satellite signals. It should not be confused with ASTRON GPS Solar models from the same NEXTER collection.
