The SEIKO PROSPEX SBDY131 is a Japan-made mechanical diver’s watch featuring the sharp, angular case design commonly known as the Samurai. This updated model preserves the strong linear profile of the established design while introducing a more compact case, a black dial and a newly designed stainless-steel bracelet.
Compact Samurai Design
The Samurai nickname reflects the watch’s distinctive case, with angular lines and sharply defined surfaces reminiscent of a precisely shaped blade. The SBDY131 updates this recognizable style with a more condensed profile designed to provide improved comfort without losing its bold character.
The stainless-steel case measures 41.7 mm in diameter, 49.5 mm from lug to lug and 12.3 mm thick. Its reduced proportions make the modern Samurai more manageable on the wrist while retaining the substantial construction of a mechanical diver’s watch.
Black Diver’s Dial
The black dial uses large luminous hour markers and clearly defined hands for quick reading. A date calendar is positioned between the 4 and 5 o’clock markers, allowing the full LumiBrite-equipped index at 3 o’clock to remain visible.
The matching black unidirectional rotating bezel provides an elapsed-time scale, while LumiBrite on the hands, hour markers and bezel supports visibility in dark environments.
Automatic Caliber 4R35
The SBDY131 is powered by SEIKO’s 23-jewel mechanical Caliber 4R35. The movement winds automatically through normal wrist motion and can also be wound manually through the crown.
Caliber 4R35 operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of approximately 41 hours when fully wound. Its specified accuracy is +45 to −35 seconds per day under normal temperature conditions. It also includes a stop-seconds function for more precise time setting and a date calendar.
Purpose-Built Diver’s Construction
Hardlex crystal protects the dial, while a screw-down crown and screw case back support the watch’s 200 m air-diving water resistance. The unidirectional bezel is designed to prevent accidental extension of a measured elapsed time.
The watch also provides magnetic resistance. Its stainless-steel construction and functional diving features make it suitable for both active use and everyday wear.
Stainless-Steel Diver’s Bracelet
The solid stainless-steel bracelet complements the angular case design and is secured by a three-fold clasp with a secure lock, push-button release and diver extension. The bracelet accommodates a maximum wrist circumference of approximately 205 mm and connects to the case at 20 mm lugs.
