The SEIKO PROSPEX SBDC197 is a Japanese Domestic Market mechanical diver’s watch inspired by SEIKO’s original 1965 diver. This black-dial model combines a compact 40.0 mm stainless-steel case, automatic Caliber 6R55, an approximately 72-hour power reserve and 300 m water resistance for air diving.
1965 Heritage Diver’s Design
The SBDC197 carries forward the visual identity of SEIKO’s first diver’s watch from 1965 while introducing updated dimensions, movement performance and water resistance. The compact case measures 40.0 mm across, 46.4 mm from top to bottom and 13.0 mm in thickness.
The black dial uses a symmetrical arrangement designed for clear underwater reading. Moving the date window to the position between 4 and 5 o’clock allows luminous markers to be placed at all twelve hour positions. LumiBrite is applied to the hands, indexes and bezel for visibility in dark conditions.
Caliber 6R55 with a Three-Day Power Reserve
The watch is powered by SEIKO’s Caliber 6R55 mechanical movement. It winds automatically through wrist movement and can also be wound manually. When fully wound, the movement provides an approximate power reserve of 72 hours, allowing it to continue operating for approximately three days.
Caliber 6R55 operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and contains 24 jewels. Its stated accuracy is +25 to -15 seconds per day when worn on the wrist within a temperature range of 5°C to 35°C. The movement also includes a stop-seconds function and a date display.
300 m Air-Diving Water Resistance
The SBDC197 is designed as a mechanical diver’s watch with 300 m water resistance for air diving. Its diving specifications include a unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown and screw case-back.
The stainless-steel bezel is fitted with an aluminum insert for a classically styled appearance. The diving scale is laser engraved and filled with paint to provide a precise, durable display.
DiaShield and Curved Sapphire Crystal
The stainless-steel case and bracelet feature SEIKO’s DiaShield surface treatment, which improves resistance to everyday scratches. A curved sapphire crystal protects the dial and includes an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface to reduce distracting reflections.
The newly designed stainless-steel bracelet uses short-pitch links that follow the curve of the wrist. It is secured by a push-button clasp with a secure lock and diver’s extension mechanism. The bracelet accommodates wrists up to approximately 195 mm.

SBDC197 is distributed in Japan as a SEIKO Global Brand Core Shop exclusive model. This designation refers to its authorized retail channel and does not mean that the watch is a numbered limited edition. It is a regular-production model within the PROSPEX Diver Scuba collection.
