SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SBEC009 Mechanical Chronograph
The SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SBEC009 is a Japanese Domestic Market mechanical chronograph inspired by milestones from SEIKO’s sports-timing history. Its charcoal-gray dial, hammer-shaped chronograph pushers and sharply defined hands and indexes combine a neo-classical appearance with the performance of the automatic Caliber 8R46.
Inspired by Japan’s First Chronograph Wristwatch
The SBEC009 draws design inspiration from the Crown Chronograph introduced by SEIKO in 1964 as Japan’s first chronograph wristwatch. Its charcoal-gray dial, faceted hour markers, sharp hour and minute hands, outer scale and distinctive hammer-shaped pushers reinterpret those historical elements in a contemporary mechanical chronograph.
Vintage-toned LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes, complementing the dial’s classical character while supporting visibility in low-light conditions. The two-register layout includes a small-seconds display and a 30-minute chronograph counter, with a date window positioned at six o’clock.
Automatic Chronograph Caliber 8R46
The watch is powered by SEIKO’s Caliber 8R46, an automatic mechanical chronograph movement with manual winding. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 34 jewels and provides approximately 45 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
The chronograph mechanism incorporates a vertical clutch and column wheel for precise operation and durability. SEIKO’s three-pointed hammer system is designed to reset the chronograph hands rapidly and simultaneously. The movement also includes a stop-seconds mechanism, small-seconds display and date function.
DiaShield and Dual-Curved Sapphire Crystal
The stainless steel case and bracelet are treated with SEIKO’s DiaShield surface coating. The case measures 42.5 mm across, 50.0 mm from top to bottom and 15.1 mm thick. A dual-curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface protects the dial while supporting clear readability.
The stainless steel bracelet uses a three-fold clasp with a push-button release. A transparent screw case back provides a view of the mechanical chronograph movement.
Practical Chronograph Performance
The SBEC009 includes a 30-minute stopwatch, tachymeter scale and small-seconds display. Its 10-bar water resistance and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m support practical everyday use. This is a sports chronograph and is not designated as a diver’s watch.
Core Shop Japanese Domestic Market Model
SBEC009 is the Japanese domestic reference distributed through the SEIKO Global Brand Core Shop network. It is the regular-production charcoal-gray model in the original mechanical SPEEDTIMER collection and must not be confused with SBEC007, the separate white-dial limited edition of 1,000 pieces.
The corresponding international reference is SRQ037J1. Japanese Domestic Market classification identifies the intended market and model-number system and is separate from the watch’s confirmed manufacture in Japan.
